FAQs
What age groups do you teach?
+

We welcome surfers of all ages! Our camps and lessons are designed for kids as young as 5 years old through adults. We tailor our instruction to match each student's age, skill level, and learning style.

Kids' Surf Camps: Ages 5-14

Surf Lessons: 5 and up

Surf Events: 5 and up

Do I need any prior surfing experience?
+

Not at all! We specialize in teaching first-time surfers and helping them catch their very first wave. Our certified instructors have decades of experience working with beginners, and our teaching methods are designed to get you standing up and riding waves safely.

Whether it's your first time on a board or you're ready to take your skills to the next level, Skudin Surf helps you achieve beyond what you thought possible.

What should I bring to my lesson or camp?
+

We provide all surf equipment: Surfboards, rashguards, and wetsuits (lessons only)

You should bring:

• Towel
• Swimsuit
• Sunscreen (reef-safe recommended)
• Water bottle
• Lunch (for camp sessions)
• Positive attitude and stoke!

How do you ensure student safety?
+

Safety is our #1 priority. It guides every decision at Skudin Surf.

Our safety measures include:

• All camp employees are CPR & first aid certified. Ocean Managers and Directors are certified lifeguards.
• Low student-to-instructor ratios for personalized attention
• Thorough ocean safety education
• Premium equipment for each student
• Three generations of professional surfing experience
• Constant monitoring of ocean conditions

We assess weather and surf conditions daily to ensure the safest learning environment for all skill levels.

What happens if the weather is bad?
+

Your safety comes first! If conditions aren't safe for lessons (lightning, dangerous surf, etc.), we'll reschedule your session at no additional cost.

We monitor conditions closely and will contact you as early as possible if we need to reschedule. Rain alone doesn't cancel lessons—you're getting wet anyway! But we never compromise on safety when it comes to ocean conditions.

What conditions are favorable for a surf lesson?
+

We remove the guesswork for you! Each location's schedule is built for its unique surf break. For example, Long Beach Surf Lessons are only offered during lower tide periods throughout the day. This is why you may see different times throughout the week.

Please keep in mind, we are at the mercy of mother nature. Conditions can change rapidly and no surfing session is the same. This provides a lot of stoke but sometimes disappointment. We do our best and will contact you if we need to reschedule your session.

Where are you located?
+

We operate at three beautiful locations on Long Island and NYC:

Long Beach: Our home location highlighted by all-day camp, advanced coaching, and beginner lessons.
Lido Beach: A secluded location perfect for young beginners and large groups.
Rockaway Beach: Our Queens coastal hub, perfect for all surfing levels.

Located on Beach 67th St.

Exact locations are available on the registration page of each program.

Can parents watch the surf camp?
+

Absolutely! Parents are welcome to watch from the beach. There's nothing better than seeing your child catch their first wave!

We ask that parents stay on the beach during instruction to allow our staff to maintain focus and provide the best learning experience. The City of Long Beach does require a beach pass for everyone over 12 years old. The ticket booth opens at 9:00 am. Drop off and pickup are free.

What makes Skudin Surf different?

We're in the business of transformation—helping people make the impossible possible, both in and out of the water.

I’ve never surfed before. Can I still come for a lesson or camp?
+

Absolutely! We specialize in teaching all levels from beginner lessons for first timers to coaching for the experienced surfer.

How can I book a camp or lesson?
+

Camp registrations must be completed online by a legal parent or guardian. If you would like to gift a camp session, gift cards are available for purchase!

Lessons can be booked online or over the phone.

What if I can’t make it for the full week camp?
+

Our full-day and half-day camps are offered as 5-day weeks or single-day options. Single day enrollment begins in the spring. You can not purchase a week and split it into days.

Can I sign up for a full week of camp and spread out the days throughout the summer?
+

This is not an option. One week of camp is available only for five consecutive days, Monday through Friday. We offer daily registrations and private lessons if you would like a more flexible schedule.

What conditions are favorable for a surf lesson?
+

We remove the guesswork for you! All of our Long Beach Surf Lessons are scheduled around the tide. Rather than run at all possible times, we’ve elected to only offer lessons when surf conditions are optimal.

Please keep in mind, we are at the mercy of mother nature. Conditions can change rapidly and no surfing session is the same. This provides a lot of stoke but sometimes disappointment. We do our best and will contact you if we need to reschedule your session.

Is there a minimum or maximum age for students?
+

For all camps and private surf lessons, the minimum age is 5 years old. There is no upper age limit.

I’m not a good swimmer. Can I still learn how to surf?
+

Yes, you can, but for adults, you should be able to tread water. For kids please have them let the instructor know if they are not a good swimmer. For the younger kids, the yellow group, campers will be in the water one-on-one with an instructor.

What do I need to bring for my surf lesson or camp?
+

You will need gear for a normal beach day – arrive in a bathing suit, bring towel, sunscreen, lunch and a drink to stay hydrated. A board and rashguard are provided for all camps and lessons.

If you would like to stay on the beach please bring chairs, umbrellas and everything you need for a fun day. Chair & umbrella rental is available at our Long Beach location with Beach Comfort Chair and Umbrella rental.

Do I need my own surfboard?
+

No. We will provide you with any necessary equipment for surfing including a surfboard and a rash guard.

What kind of boards do you use?
+

We exclusively use Liquid Shredder Soft-Top Boards. We usually carry 7, 8, and 9 foot boards. We’ve found Liquid Shredder to be the easiest board to learn with, allowing you to nail-down the fundamentals before transitioning to high-performance boards.

Half and All-Day Camps: To keep everyone safe, you must use the boards we provide.

Lessons and High Performance Camp: You can bring your own board or use one of ours.

Can I request my instructor for my lesson?
+

Yes, we always welcome requests for instructors. We cannot guarantee the instructor’s availability, but we will do our best to make it happen.

Do I have to be an experienced surfer or a beginner for the Group Class?
+

This group, like all of our other lessons, is open to all levels of experience! However, we do not recommend small children (younger than 10 years old) join this class.

How many people are in a Group Class?
+

Enrollment for our Group Surf Lessons fluctuates day to day. The group can be as small as 2 people and will max out at 10–20, depending on the time of the season.

Average weekday class size is 5 participants. Average weekend group class is 10 participants.

Is there a minimum or maximum age for the Weekend Group Class?
+

Yes. The minimum age for the group class is 14 years old. There is no upper age limit.

What happens if it rains when we’re surfing?
+

We love surfing in the rain! It’s safe as long as there’s no lightning and, let’s face it – you’re already wet.

If the conditions do not permit, we will reschedule your lesson or camp day. We will notify you if we have to cancel due to unsafe weather conditions.

What if the surf conditions are unsafe?
+

If surf conditions are unsafe (ex: strong rip currents, strong winds, high surf advisory) you will be notified via email and/or text (if opted in for text notifications) as soon as possible.

We will always post to our social media sites and update our website with these updates as well.

What happened to the Adult Camp?
+

Adult Camp is no longer offered. We’ve switched to a group-lesson model (similar to adult camp) to provide a better experience to our adult surfers, structured around the tides.

Does my child need a physical to participate in camp?
+

We do ask general medical questions on our camp registration form, but it is not required to have a physical to participate in camp.

Will my child be in the water for all of camp?
+

Four hours straight in the water is a long time and unreasonable for most people. To keep things safe (and engaging), we split the kids up based on age and rotate them in 30-minute sessions between surfing and beach activities.

Activities are designed to supplement surf education (agility, swimming, balance, etc.).

Do you offer a payment plan for camps?
+

We do not offer a payment plan; all registrations must be paid in full at time of registration.

Do you offer camp scholarships?
+

No, we do not have any scholarships available for surf camp.

+

No, we do not offer sibling discounts.

Are you still operating at Nickerson Beach & do you offer skate camp?
+

We are no longer offering skate camp.

Our Nickerson Beach location has moved to Lido Beach Town Park (a half of mile west of Nickerson Beach). Camp times are 11:30–3:30. We are now offering a full day surf camp at Long Beach from 8:30–3:30.
